Sent July 20th, 2023
Happy summer, members of the 2023 Spirit and Sound!
Over the summer you’ll be receiving updates from the band in the form of informational emails, this being the second. If you didn't get the first email (titled OSUMB June Mailer), you can find its contents right here. Additionally, there will be a separate email about camp housing coming at the beginning of August. Please take the time to absorb the info so that we can jump right in when camp starts.
Signup Deadline
I'm both thrilled and a little terrified at the size of the band for this upcoming fall. It is looking to be a record year! However, I’m worried about potential capacity issues both with instrument stock and our seating area in the stadium. This year signups will close at the end of the day on July 31st. That will leave us plenty of time to take stock of where we are with instruments and figure out what, if anything, we need to do in order to make the band work for the season!
Home Schedule and Shows
I'm happy to be able to announce that we have solidified the songs for halftime shows this fall! Below is the full slate that we'll be bringing to life in our halftime shows:
Show 1 – Dolly Parton
Intro – I Will Always Love You / Jolene
Dance Team Feature – Why’d You Come In Here Lookin’ Like That
Closer – 9 to 5
Show 2 – Girl Groups
You Can’t Hurry Love – The Supremes

How You Like That – Blackpink
Show 3 – Avatar, The Last Airbender

If you want to get hyped, feel free to check out the 2023 shows playlist on Spotify. Additionally, we'll be starting each halftime with a brand new take the field sequence which we are working on right now.
Housing
This is just a reminder to keep your eye on the start of camp, and to make sure you don't end up having to cancel something in order to make it. Once again, camp housing information will come out in early August, as we want to be closer to the complete roster before trying to tackle that. When the form gets sent out, it will be coming from Nicole and everybody needs to fill it out.
Rhythm and Beavs
Rhythm and Beavs (R&B) is our audition-only travel and special events band within the Athletics Bands program here at OSU. R&B’s primary job is to cover Basketball games during fall quarter, and the PAC12 and NCAA tournaments for Basketball in March, but they also cover certain special events throughout the year. The group is a great experience and represents OSU to the nation through the highly viewed games and events to which they travel. Auditions for R&B will take place utilizing music learned during camp, and will take place during week two of fall quarter. We take two bands of 29 members each, keep it on your radar.
R&B has a rhythm section comprised of drum set and electric bass, which means if you play those instruments you are more than welcome to try out on them. Rhythm section will have its own audition process after the winds are set. They will involve playing in different styles and tempos, more on rhythm section specific materials to come later.
Preseason Games
This year we have two home games prior to camp week. We’re going to cover them like this:
Alumni Game – OSU vs UCD – Sept 9th
OSUMB Alumni
OSUMB returning musicians – voluntary gig
Mid-Camp Game – OSU vs SDSU – Sept 16th
OSUMB Leadership, Drumline, Color Guard
OSUMB returning musicians – voluntary gig
If you'd like to play for one or both of these the games, we’ll be sending out the signups within the next week.
New members: don't worry either of these, we'll see you at camp on the 17th.
Go Beavs,
-Hannum
